Sam has been re-elected as the MP for East Surrey in the General Election held on 8th June 2017. He.was first elected as the MP for East Surrey in 2010 and was re-elected this time with a majority of almost 24,000.
Born in Beaconsfield, was educated at schools both in the UK and Ghana. He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University, where he was elected President of the Oxford Union. On leaving University Sam joined the graduate scheme at Goldman Sachs, where he worked for 5 years. He then left the City to use his experience to help build and develop a number of small businesses in the training, recruitment and internet sectors. He was voted CBI Entrepreneur of the Future in 2005.
Outside of business, Sam has pursued a strong interest in educational matters, having served on both the development board at Somerville College and the board of a housing association working with ex-offenders, as well as being a former Governor of an inner London school. He has been a volunteer and fundraiser for Crisis and the Down’s Syndrome Association, as well as supporting St Catherine’s Hospice in Surrey. Sam is a Vice President of Young Epilepsy in Lingfield.
In Parliament, he has served on the International Development Select Committee and the Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral Commission, and in 2011 led the “Beyond the Banks” campaign to help improve access to credit for small business. In September 2012, Sam was promoted to the role of Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, David Cameron. Subsequent appointments icluded Ministeral roles in the Department for Education and the Cabinet Office. In 2015 he was reappointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Childcare and Education.
Until Parliament was dissolved he was Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Justice Department leading specifically on Prisons and Probation and helping with the progressive reform to our criminal justice system so that it works for everyone.
Sam’s general interests include skiing, cooking, and running (he ran the London Marathon in 2008). He is also a keen Arsenal football supporter.
